Food Substitutions

Have you every run out of an ingredient and can't prepare a meal because of this? One of these food substitutions may help.

 

Ingredient  Amount Instead use:
Baking powder 1 tsp

1/4 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Buttermilk 1 cup 1 cup plain yogut or 1 cup whole milk plus 1 Tbsp lemon juice or vinegar (let sit for 5 minutes)
Cake Flour 1 cup 1 cup sifted all purpose flour less 2 Tbsp
Chocolate, unsweetened                1 square 3 tbsp cocoa plus 1 Tbsp butter
Cornstarch, for thickening 1 Tbsp 2 Tbsp all purpose flour
Corn syrup, light (not for baking) 1 cup 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1/2 cup water
Cream, heavy (not for whipping) 1 cup 3/4 cup milk plus 1/3 cup melted butter
Cream, light 1 cup 3/4 cup milk plus 1/4 cup melted butter
Cream, sour 1 cup

7/8 cup milk plus 1 1/2 Tbsp melted butter

 Flour 1 cup minus 2 tablespoons 1 cup cake flour
Garlic 1 small clove 1 1/8 tsp garlic powder
Half-and-half 1 cup 7/8 cup milk plus 1 1/2 Tbsp melted butter
Honey 1 cup 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar plus 1/4 cup water
 Milk 1 cup 1/2 cup evaporated milk plus 1/2 cup water
Vinegar 1 tsp 2 tsp lemon juice
