Carpet Cleaning Tips
You just had new carpet installed in the living room, no all you think about is what if…! A living room is meant to be lived in. Even though new carpet has been installed, it doesn’t mean the room should to be roped off and only used on special occasions. There will be the sporadic accidents. In order to avoid any gathering of dust or other foreign material, here are some tips for keeping that carpet looking fresh and new.
The greatest thing is ScotchGuard. If your carpet isn’t already sprayed try to do this yourself, especially in high traffic areas.
- Vacuum regularly
- If anything is spilled on the carpet; take a white paper towel (printed towels may bleed the color onto the carpet) and pat the spill until it is absorbed onto the paper towel. You will want to soak up the spill and rub it in.
- Use mats by the door to catch most of the grime that travel in from shoes. If possible, try to have everyone remove their shoes at the door.
- Make sure to test any cleaning supplies in an inconspicuous spot to be sure that it will not fade or discolor your carpet.*
- If you choose to have your carpet shampooed; be sure to ask if the scotch guard will be removed in the process.
- Do not allow any family member to eat in the living room.
*Cleaning supplies note: There are so many products that claim to remove stains from carpets. Some of these carpet cleaners not only remove the scotch guard, but lighten the soiled area as well. These cleansers not only are toxic but they contain hazardous chemicals as well.
New carpet is a costly undertaking. To make sure it is kept as pristine as possible, you can use these tips for cleaning your carpets. However, as mentioned earlier your home is meant to be lived in; so accidental spills will happen. Don’t stress over it. Just clean up the spillage as soon as possible and set some ground rules for the entire family.
